3 Taboo Skincare Ingredients That Really Work!

 cxRrCyUUBI1i3bO1H3nNe1IiDBjy0152nt5XRj5mFeE

skinChemists go beyond ordinary skincare with their unconventional yet very effective ingredients. Have you ever thought about slathering snake venom or bee venom on your face? How about Argentinian bovine placenta? Well we’re here to take you on a journey through these ingredients so you can understand their fabulous skincare benefits.

  1. Snake Venom – Syn© -Ake
This is a synthetic form of snake venom which works in 3 steps to freeze, firm and hydrate the skin. Syn-ake replicates the effects of a peptide known as Waglerin 1, which is found in the venom of the poisonous Temple Viper snake. It’s designed to work a lot like Botox (minus the needles), so cell movement and muscular contractions are reduced, ultimately keeping your skin smooth and wrinkle free. The effects are fast-acting and long-lasting, but the product has to be used continually as the effects are temporary.
  2. Bee Venom
There is nothing synthetic about the bee venom, it’s the real thing! But have no fear, it’s ethically and sustainably sourced. The bees sting a pane of glass, leaving venom behind without extracting their sting, so they don’t die. The bee venom tricks the skin into thinking it has been stung, which causes the body to direct blood towards the area and stimulate your natural production of collagen and elastin. Collagen strengthens your skin while elastin is the protein that helps your skin remain taut, firm and youthful. It improves texture and firmness, visibly reducing pores, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and sun damage.
  3. Argentinian Bovine Placenta
And now for the placenta, which is perhaps the most taboo of them all (and entirely ethically sourced too of course)!  Rich in vitamins, amino acids and minerals, placenta is known for its targeted action on the skin. Its rich source of nutritional elements boosts skin cell reproduction and stimulates the growth of fibroblasts and epidermis within your skin which produce collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. Iron improves oxygen absorption by the skin cells and vitamins eliminate free radical damage which causes premature ageing. Your skin is left clear, plump and youthful.

So if you had any reservations about these unique, yet powerful ingredients, hopefully this has settled your mind and enlightened you to the brilliant benefits for your skin.

PS fun fact – Kate Middleton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall are known to be fans of bee venom treatments!

Office Beauty Hacks

Take a look at Ella’s top tips for office beauty.

In need of some tips to help your skin and make-up stay at its optimum, from the crack of dawn until those post-work drinks? I asked some of my nearest and dearest office friends to share their office beauty secrets and reveal how they stay looking polished all day long.

Tip no. 1 # Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Whether your office has central-heating or air-conditioning, your face, lips and hands dry out quickly. Keep a facial mist, lip balm and hand cream on your desk and apply throughout the day. Not only will this keep your skin hydrated and moisturised, but it can be a great way to de-stress.

Tip no.2 # Go natural during the day. You don’t need to pile on make-up during the day, save it for the evening for a dramatic change! If you know you want to do a smoky eye for your night out, then wear minimal eye make-up (or none) during the day so you aren’t applying new make-up onto the old.

Tip no.3 # Use a finely-milled powder. Face powder helps set make-up and a good quality one won’t accentuate any dry areas or look chalky. Re-apply once at lunchtime and then after work if you’re heading out. Even the act of swirling a brush on your make-up can freshen it up!

Tip no.4 # Keep a compact make-up bag with you just in case someone arranges something last-minute and you don’t want to miss out. Keeping a few essentials close by to amp up your make-up look will leave you feeling fresher; a long-lasting cream eyeshadow, face powder, highlighter, a bright lipstick and a sample perfume so you smell amazing too.

Tip no.5 # The easiest tip of all is to drink more water! Everyone knows drinking water helps your skin look more healthy and radiant; the perfect pick-me-up if after work activities involve an alcoholic beverage or two. See who can drink the most water in a day and incentivise it with a fabulous prize.

I hope you find some of these tricks useful if you work in an office. What are your office beauty hacks?

4 Products For Sensitive Skin

Our guest beauty blogger, Ella Ryder, has been at it again! This time she’s sharing her top products for those sensitive skin types out there.

Sensitive skin types can often be overlooked by the beauty industry, with acne-prone skin and anti-ageing solutions taking the spotlight. For those of you with sensitive skin, I’m here to show you a few products that should help any irritation or redness that you might be prone to:

  1. Decléor Energising Gel, 150 ml £36.00. This green gel locks in moisture without being sticky and works to repair the skin cells from damage, such as stretch marks or scarring. It can be used on the face or body and if you use it everyday, you’ll definitely notice a difference in the overall firmness of the skin. I’ve chosen this as a sensitive skin product because it helps fade imperfections in a gentle way, as opposed to using exfoliating acids which is the most common way to treat issues like scarring.
  2. Elemis S.O.S Survival Cream, 50 ml, £52.50. When you are having an S.O.S moment with your skin, this is what you need. I wrote a entire blog post on how it helped my skin here. Don’t be scared by the balm texture; just use a small amount and warm it in your hands before gently patting onto the offending areas. Then leave it to work its magic overnight. Lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus are the key soothing ingredients in this. I recommend having this on standby if you’re prone to redness and sensitivity as it works almost immediately. I must admit I only have a small tube of the men’s version at the moment (don’t ask!) but they both work equally well.
  3. Elemis Herbal Lavender Repair Mask, 75 ml, £30.00. This is one of my favourite face masks for when my skin is feeling unbalanced. For an intense treatment, use this before applying the S.O.S Cream and you’ll be amazed at the transformation. Again, the lavender is essential to calming the skin. I love this because it doesn’t dry hard like a lot of masks. In fact, it pretty much sinks into the skin making it undetectable to anyone else. Sometimes I even forget I have it on! Even if you have oily skin this is great at helping to balance the skin without stripping it of its natural oils.
  4. Nuxe Comforting Cleansing Milk, 200 ml, £14.00. I’m using this as my main cleanser at the moment because it leaves my skin feeling so soft and is really effective at removing make-up. |Double-cleansing in the evening is really important if you wear make-up, so I use one pump to remove face and eye make-up, rinse and then re-apply for a more thorough clean. The instructions say you can use this without water but I feel much cleaner using it. If you’re having unexplained problems with your skincare routine, always start with the cleanser because it’s the most important step. This is very affordable and smells like a combination of rose and coconut oil, which would explain the pretty pink colour.

5 hair trends & tips from an industry insider!

Asgar Saboo, by Javed Mohammed (3)There were some fabulous hair styles at London Fashion Week. Luckily for you, we have 5 ultimate hair trends complete with top tips from hairstylist to the stars, Asgar Saboo. Now’s your chance to recreate some of the most chic styles, right from the comfort of your home.

  1. The Glossy Pony
Use straighteners to get your hair silky smooth. Then get your ponytail in place and fix it with kirby grips. Finally, Asgar suggests using a high shine fixing spray to get a fantastic, glossy finish. This celebrity favourite exudes elegance, so team it with a polished label and you’ll ooze sophistication just like Olivia Palermo.
  2. The Traditional French Braid
A French braid is a timeless classic that luckily for us, is quick to do – perfect for the ‘morning after the night before’. This style is great when it looks effortless, so don’t be afraid to leave the braid slightly messy or loose around the face. To ensure that you look chic all day long, be sure to fix the braid with a little hairspray.
  3. Tousled Lob
The long bob has been enjoying the spot light for a while, with celebs like Margot Robbie embracing the elegant style. Stand out from the crowd with Asgar’s suggestion: use a salt or texture spray to give your hair that little bit of volume. Using a small round brush, blow dry sections of the hair, rolling away from your face. Complete the process with a curling iron, curling an inch from the root, leaving the root straight. Then run your fingers through the hair to break up the waves. Hey presto!
  4. Do The Twist
The popular halo braid is doing the rounds at fashion shows, exclusive parties and more, with the likes of Sienna Miller donning the twist. Start with freshly blow dried hair to get rid of frizz, then starting from the left side of the head, loosely French plait the hair working clockwise across your hair. Finish at the nape of the neck to complete the halo look. Pair this look with a minimalist label and you’ll achieve laidback chic.
  5. Curls World
It’s time to embrace volume and curls with the return of 80’s style. Starting from the back of your hair, grab small sections and use a 10mm curling wand to achieve tight curls. Try to avoid curling big sections of your hair at once, as the curls may not last. Finish by applying hairspray, holding the can diagonally and away from your face. Asgar says don’t be afraid to add as much volume as you dare! Use a comb to backcomb hair and set with hairspray.

Nail Tutorial – Grey Glitter

Ella is here to give you all an insight into a little autumnal sparkle!

IMG_1270

In my opinion, you’re never too old for sparkly nails. Now that we’re heading into the colder months, I feel like it’s acceptable to start integrating the glitter again. However, keeping it understated is key, otherwise you’ll be sick of the shimmer by the time Christmas rolls around! So I’m biding my time by doing a subtle take on glittery nails, using two of my favourite nail polishes from Essie.

After applying a base coat, my first step is to apply a neutral, ‘greige’ colour. Red would have been too festive and I love how sophisticated a grey-toned nail looks at this time of year. I used Essie’s ‘School of Hard Rocks’ – £8.76 – 15 ml,  but you can choose any similar colour from the range. I applied two coats of this for a glossy finish.

IMG_1272

Next stop, glitter! I applied a layer of Essie’s LuxeEffects ‘Set in Stones’ – £8.76 – 15 ml, which I have used a lot.  It’s a clear polish with silver glitter flecks to create a subtle glitz on your nails. You can apply this on top of any nail polish colour to transform it into something a little more exciting. Lastly apply a top coat and voilà.

2 Steps to Softer Hair

Our beauty blogger of the month, Ella Ryder, talks soft hair.

While some are blessed with a silky smooth mane, some of us struggle to keep hair feeling soft and manageable. I personally have a lot of fine hair which is naturally quite wavy. It was quite damaged from highlights over the summer and now having gone back to the dark side, I’ve been trying to repair my hair by giving it the nourishment that it needs (and deserves)!

I’m quite fussy about what products I use because I don’t like to wash my hair everyday and I find that a lot of shampoos and styling products can weigh my hair down. I’ve been using two products recently that have helped keep my hair feeling like it hasn’t been put through its paces.

macadami_weightless_moisture_shampooThe first is the Macadamia Professional Weightless Moisture Shampoo, £18.90, 300 ml. It’s colour-safe and cruelty, sulphate, paraben and gluten-free. This particular formula is designed to cleanse the scalp and fine hair, promoting lift, body and volume while retaining hair colour. Pretty much my perfect product!

The ingredients are made up of an exclusive Pro Oil Complex of Macadamia and Argan Oils to help strengthen and repair the hair, while Avocado and Walnut Oils nourish and hydrate. It smells delicious, with a delicate sweet pecan fragrance too. The Pro Oil Complex is a lightweight combination and you can really notice (or not as the name would suggest). When I use this my hair feels clean and bouncy, so I recommend this for anyone with fine hair who wants a natural lift. I have my eye on the Deep Repair Masque next…

After washing and drying my hair I like to use a serum to help tame any flyaways and add a 42020_original_treatment_25ml_rgblittle shine. My favourite product at the moment for this is the MoroccanOil Treatment Original, £13.35, 25ml. I have the travel size but I’ll definitely be investing in the larger one when I run out. You can use this on wet or dry hair; I prefer it on dry hair because I can tell how much I need without overusing (it goes a long way). I was a bit sceptical before I bought this as there was a lot of hype around it, but I was pleasantly surprised. As well as keeping my hair in a good healthy condition, it smells incredible – something I didn’t really expect. I would call this product a green juice for your hair!

A couple of extra tips to keep hair soft and prevent damage is to use snag-free hair bands or a clip to keep hair off your face. A good quality wide-tooth comb like this one  is also ideal for when you’re brushing wet hair. Follow these tips and I guarantee your hair will feel so much healthier in no time.

Tried & Tested Bodycare

It’s time for tried and tested with Ella Ryder, our beauty blogger of the month.

IMG_1258

It can be very tempting to pick up an exfoliator from your local supermarket for under a fiver, but sometimes luxury quality and the results are worth the splurge. We take such care of the skin on our face, so why don’t we extend the same love and care to our bodies? After all, there’s much more of it!

I recently tried out the Decléor Aroma Cleanse exfoliating ‘fresh skin’ body cream – £31.50, 200ml. I’ve used Decléor skincare before, so I was excited to try their bodycare for the first time. The good thing about exfoliators is that you can generally tell straight away if you like them or not, whereas skincare results can take a bit longer.

This product intrigued me because it’s a cream exfoliator which I’d never heard of before. You apply it to dry skin on the driest parts of your body (e.g. knees, elbows) and damp skin for everywhere else. It’s very gentle to use but it definitely works. It smells lovely too, which is always a treat! I had some areas of peeling (nice, I know) from my summer holiday and this helped effectively remove them without being painful. It was easy to wash off and didn’t leave my shower messy or slippery, which some exfoliators often do. If you have very dry skin, this would be an amazing body exfoliator because your skin feels so soft and moisturised after using it. I didn’t even feel the need to apply a body lotion!

It’s important to take time to look after your body and Decléor’s aromatherapy qualities are ideal to help your body (and soul) unwind. After trying something a little more expensive than my usual high-street brands, I’ll be making room for a couple of special products on my beauty shelf for those moments when I need something that really delivers – and this truly does!

Have you tried this exfoliating body cream? It would be great to hear your reviews.
