Festival Essentials

After what seems like forever, the long-awaited festival season is finally here. Before you get out your wellies, braid your hair or glitter your cheeks, make sure your beauty kit is up to scratch with these five festival essentials.

#1 Compact Styler – Tangle Teezer

Avoid knotted hair with the Compact Styler from Tangle Teezer. The British brand, who revolutionised the hairbrush industry, have released the perfect festival companion, the Compact Styler. The lightweight, mini version of the brush is perfect to use on-the-go and features a removable cover which prevents the flexi teeth from damage as you carry it around. Small enough, durable enough and pretty enough to make the ultimate festival haircare essential.

#2 Kiss Kiss Roselip – Guerlain

Keep your lips hydrated and full of colour with the Guerlain KissKiss Tinted Lip Balm. Available in six different shades, this plumping lip balm is infused with essential oil of rose making it super hydrating. With shades ranging from natural pinks, to deep violets, there’s a shade to suit everybody.

#3 Coverstik Concealer – Covermark

As foundation is the last thing on anyone’s mind at a festival, keep your blemishes and dark spots covered with the Coverstik concealer from Covermark. Mix with a little moisturiser or Beauty Flash Balm to hide dark spots under eyes, or use alone and directly on to any darker or more troublesome blemishes.

#4 Perfume Atomiser – Travalo

With shower queues longer than the queue for the headliner and your only keep-clean facilities being babywipes, deodorant and whatever rain you may be cursed with, keeping clean at a festival is a seriously hard task. And although we’d all love to bring a bottle of our favourite perfume, it’s heavy, breakable and expensive. That’s where the Travalo Atomiser comes in. This tiny, pocket-sized atomiser can be filled up using your regular perfume by simply removing the cap and pumping the atomiser until it’s full. This shatterproof, leakproof necessity will fit just about anywhere, and with two in a pack, you can take one for a friend.

#5 Beauty Flash Balm – Clarins

Described within the industry as ‘Cinderella in a tube’ Beauty Flash Balm is a Clarins best seller destined for festival use. Part moisturiser, part instant skin fix, this product is the perfect pick-me-up for tired skin. To freshen, brighten and make skin radiant, use Beauty Flash Balm first thing in the morning to leave your skin glowing all day.

Office Beauty Hacks

Take a look at Ella’s top tips for office beauty.

In need of some tips to help your skin and make-up stay at its optimum, from the crack of dawn until those post-work drinks? I asked some of my nearest and dearest office friends to share their office beauty secrets and reveal how they stay looking polished all day long.

Tip no. 1 # Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Whether your office has central-heating or air-conditioning, your face, lips and hands dry out quickly. Keep a facial mist, lip balm and hand cream on your desk and apply throughout the day. Not only will this keep your skin hydrated and moisturised, but it can be a great way to de-stress.

Tip no.2 # Go natural during the day. You don’t need to pile on make-up during the day, save it for the evening for a dramatic change! If you know you want to do a smoky eye for your night out, then wear minimal eye make-up (or none) during the day so you aren’t applying new make-up onto the old.

Tip no.3 # Use a finely-milled powder. Face powder helps set make-up and a good quality one won’t accentuate any dry areas or look chalky. Re-apply once at lunchtime and then after work if you’re heading out. Even the act of swirling a brush on your make-up can freshen it up!

Tip no.4 # Keep a compact make-up bag with you just in case someone arranges something last-minute and you don’t want to miss out. Keeping a few essentials close by to amp up your make-up look will leave you feeling fresher; a long-lasting cream eyeshadow, face powder, highlighter, a bright lipstick and a sample perfume so you smell amazing too.

Tip no.5 # The easiest tip of all is to drink more water! Everyone knows drinking water helps your skin look more healthy and radiant; the perfect pick-me-up if after work activities involve an alcoholic beverage or two. See who can drink the most water in a day and incentivise it with a fabulous prize.

I hope you find some of these tricks useful if you work in an office. What are your office beauty hacks?

Tried & Tested Bodycare

It’s time for tried and tested with Ella Ryder, our beauty blogger of the month.

It can be very tempting to pick up an exfoliator from your local supermarket for under a fiver, but sometimes luxury quality and the results are worth the splurge. We take such care of the skin on our face, so why don’t we extend the same love and care to our bodies? After all, there’s much more of it!

I recently tried out the Decléor Aroma Cleanse exfoliating ‘fresh skin’ body cream – £31.50, 200ml. I’ve used Decléor skincare before, so I was excited to try their bodycare for the first time. The good thing about exfoliators is that you can generally tell straight away if you like them or not, whereas skincare results can take a bit longer.

This product intrigued me because it’s a cream exfoliator which I’d never heard of before. You apply it to dry skin on the driest parts of your body (e.g. knees, elbows) and damp skin for everywhere else. It’s very gentle to use but it definitely works. It smells lovely too, which is always a treat! I had some areas of peeling (nice, I know) from my summer holiday and this helped effectively remove them without being painful. It was easy to wash off and didn’t leave my shower messy or slippery, which some exfoliators often do. If you have very dry skin, this would be an amazing body exfoliator because your skin feels so soft and moisturised after using it. I didn’t even feel the need to apply a body lotion!

It’s important to take time to look after your body and Decléor’s aromatherapy qualities are ideal to help your body (and soul) unwind. After trying something a little more expensive than my usual high-street brands, I’ll be making room for a couple of special products on my beauty shelf for those moments when I need something that really delivers – and this truly does!

Have you tried this exfoliating body cream? It would be great to hear your reviews.

8 Facts About Make-Up

Our Blogger of the Month, Ella Ryder, shares her 8 Facts About Make-up.

We all like to dabble when it comes to make-up, whether it’s on a daily basis, for a special occasion, or even for a bit of fun. It has become somewhat of a staple of our lives. Here are some facts and top tips for you to make the most of that gorgeous face of yours!

  1. Less is more – Always start with the minimum amount of make-up you think you need. That way you can build up a look gradually without overdoing it and having to start again.
  2. Different colours suit different people – Just because your bronzed friend suits mint green eyeshadow, it doesn’t mean you will. Learn what colours suit your complexion.
  3. You’re probably using more foundation than you need to – It can be tempting to slap on a lot of foundation when your skin isn’t looking its best. If you concentrate on any blemishes or imperfections first, then take a step back to see how it looks, you’ll be surprised at how little you need to wear. You don’t have to hide behind layers and layers.
  4. Red lipstick is a timeless, sexy classic – You can’t go wrong with a classic red lip! They make a sophisticated yet daring statement, day or night. Find the right shade for you and you’ll be looking hot hot hot.
  5. Use make-up to enhance your beauty, not mask it – Play up your favourite features rather than trying to change your face with make-up.
  6. A lot of women feel ‘naked’ without mascara on – One minute we don’t have eyes and the next we do. It’s rather amazing (and strange) to see the difference coating little hairs around our eyes can make! Unless you are blessed with naturally dark, thick lashes… In which case we can’t be friends!
  7. Bronzer always ends up in places other than ‘where the sun would naturally hit’ – We all start off with good ‘sun-kissed look’ intentions, but when push comes to shove it’s a rule that often gets ignored.
  8. Applying liquid liner neatly should count as a CV skill – Seriously, it’s hard work!
Wearing make-up can be a great confidence boost, making you feel ready to take on the world. But never forget that you’re just as beautiful without!

7 Products To Autumn-Proof Your Beauty Routine

Hello! I’m very excited to be Salon Skincare’s beauty blogger of the month as it’s a website I frequently use to fuel my beauty addiction. I have a blog called Truthfully Ella where I write about my latest beauty loves, with a few lifestyle posts thrown in for good measure.

Autumn beauty routine

I recently came back from a holiday (in much sunnier climes) and the first thing I noticed was the autumnal freshness in the air. As the season changes, your beauty routine needs to adapt accordingly. So today I have gathered some of my favourite beauty products that’ll help keep your skin, make-up, hair and body looking great as the weather gets colder.

1. Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm – 100ml – £36.00. My number one recommendation for dehydrated skin. I’ve raved about this a lot on my blog as being my favourite cleanser, because it’s a luxurious balm that leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and clean. I have combination/sensitive skin and this suits it perfectly. You scoop out a small amount on your hands and massage it into the skin, removing it with the special cleansing cloth that comes with it. It’s a bit like having a mini facial at home, as you can even leave it on as a hydrating mask. The essential oils in this really relax you, which is the perfect treat after a chilly day.

2. Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel – 50ml – £32.00. If you want to keep flaky skin at bay but are wary of using a harsh exfoliator on weather-sensitive skin, then this is ideal. Infused with papaya and pineapple fruit enzymes, this Elemis peel is a smooth, cream that gently exfoliates the skin, with a delicious fruity fragrance. All you have to do is apply it to cleansed skin and leave for 10-15 minutes before washing it off to reveal baby soft skin.

3. GLAMGLOW Super-Mud Clearing Treatment – 34g – £44.99. This SUPERMUD claims to be the world’s most scientifically advanced clearing treatment and basically does anything you could think of in terms of ways to improve your skin – the perfect transitional skincare product. It may seem a tad pricey at first glance, but it’s very concentrated so you only have to use the smallest amount and it’s not something you should be using too regularly. If my skin is really acting up, whether it’s stress related or time of the month, then I reach for this. I find it immediately clears any congestion, revealing clearer looking skin. It’s what I would call a proper clay mask, so make sure you remember you have it on when answering the door to the postman!

4. St. Tropez Everyday Body Light/Medium – 200ml – £14.30. While a mud mask may not leave you feeling your most glamorous, a glowing tan most definitely will. I personally am a fan of looking healthily bronzed all year round and this is one of the best gradual self-tans I’ve found for that. It’s virtually streak-free, keeps skin hydrated, doesn’t smell strange and leaves a nice golden glow without it being obvious you’re faking it.

5. KMS california Tame Frizz Taming Creme – 125ml – £14.50. Central heating can leave hair feeling particularly flyaway or static, so this is fantastic for holding your hairstyle in place. You apply a small amount to wet hair before blow drying to control any frizziness with a light, non-sticky hold. I have quite fine hair and I don’t have a problem with this building up in my hair. I think this is particularly good against that drizzly rain we can’t seem to escape. The tube is huge too, so it lasts a while.

6. New CID i-glow Compact Pink Shimmer Powder with Mirror – £25. Now that your skin, body and hair are autumn-proofed, a couple of changes in the make-up department will go a long way in refreshing your look for the new season. For those familiar with New CID, I’m sure you’ll join me in agreeing that the make-up is of an amazing quality. I’ve chosen this powder because of it’s skin-brightening effect. Skin can look a little grey and lifeless in dull weather, so this is perfect to add a touch of colour and radiance to your face. I like to use this on its own as a blush/highlighter, but you could also use it on top of your favourite blush to give it a bit more dimension. The finish is lovely and creamy on the skin. It’s also a baked product, so don’t worry about it catching on any dry bits.

7. New CID i-gloss Light-Up Lip Gloss with Mirror – £17. I wish I’d been the one to think of this revolutionary lip gloss! With a light in the lid and a mirror on the side, this is great for applying on-the-go or in places with poor lighting. Packaging aside, the lipgloss is rather good too. It’s not gloopy and has a brush applicator, which I prefer for a more precise application. The colour I have is ‘tickled pink’ which matches the shimmer powder perfectly, but ‘coconut ice’ (a nude shade) is next on my list!

So those are my top beauty picks to kickstart your autumn beauty routine.

I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Top 6 Beauty Picks

Salon Skincare’s Beauty Director, Ellena, shares her skincare and beauty must-haves.

  1. Alpha-H Liquid Gold – 100ml – £33.50
Excitement overwhelms me when it’s ‘Liquid Gold Day’! It gently exfoliates with a tingly feeling, so you know it’s working. Skin is visibly clear, tight and bright by morning. I use it every other night and follow with a moisturiser, but for more intensity, try leaving it to work its magic on its own.
  2. Caudalie Beauty Elixir – 30ml – £11.50
This is an everyday essential. It’s great as a post-cleanse pore tightener, for setting make-up or as a general hydration pick-me-up in the office or on your travels. It’s especially good the morning after a few glasses of Prosecco! It smooth’s the skin and gives you an instant glow. It also has a yummy delicate and fresh fragrance.
  3. NIOD Photography Fluid, Opacity 12% – 30ml – £20
This is a product for the beauty curious. You may be sceptical, but it really works! It contains light reflecting prisms and hue correctors to provide instant smooth radiance, especially in front of the camera.  A few drops blended into your moisturiser or foundation and you’ll be looking lens-luminous.
  4. AmazingCosmetics® AmazingConcealer® – £15ml – £29.50
It has been dubbed ‘The World’s Best Concealer’ and a ‘The Magic Eraser’ and I agree. I’ve tried a lot in my pursuit of a blemish banisher (dastardly things) and this is the best. You don’t need a lot to get flawless coverage and you can build it up as much as you like. If it’s good enough for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley…
  5. Elemis Tan Accelerator – 125ml – £23
I love having a tan and I’m not the only one. This accelerator not only enhances your natural tanning ability by boosting melanin production, but it prolongs your tan. It leaves your skin really soft with a subtle gold shimmer finish. Be careful when opening it though, it comes racing out! (PS you’ll need to use a sun protector as it doesn’t contain an SPF).
  6. Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment – 30ml – £12.95
I’ve gone pretty nuts for this treatment (pun most definitely intended). My hair tends to get quite dry at the ends and this healing oil is an absolute saviour. It instantly improves the hairs texture, leaving it feeling soft and looking shiny. It smells absolutely delicious too. It’s quite easy to use too much so be frugal, it goes a long way!
